The incident occurred around 9 PM on Friday near Chakkar Chowk under Kotwali City police limits. Police had cornered a car carrying criminals who had allegedly assaulted a truck driver and opened fire. The criminals fired at police again and sped towards Ganj Rajwaha, but their out-of-control car hit a high-tension electricity pole and fell into a canal.
Three suspects fled immediately, but one—Neeraj, a resident of Heempur Deepa village—was trapped inside. Constables Manoj Kumar and Gangaram jumped into the canal to rescue him, unaware that live current was flowing through the water due to the damaged pole.
While pulling Neeraj out, all three were electrocuted. Bystanders raised an alarm, and police and locals rushed to pull them out before taking them to the district hospital.
Constable Manoj Kumar succumbed to his injuries during treatment, while Gangaram remains in critical condition. Neeraj, the injured suspect, is being interrogated, and police teams are searching for the three fugitives.
On Saturday morning, Manoj was given a guard of honour at the police lines, with the SP of Bijnor paying floral tributes. His body was then sent to his native village in Baghpat.
