Brits face a weekend washout as a huge band of rain appears to be barrelling towards the UK.

After enjoying a glorious few days of sunshineover the Bank Holiday, many will have hoped the roasting weather would be here to stay. However, advanced weather maps show a huge storm heading straight for the British Isles, with rain to be dumped up and down the country.

The GFS weather model shows an enormous band of rain stretching from the north to the south coast arriving on Saturday. The rainstorm is expected to hit Northern Ireland, Wales and the south-west of England at around 9am, moving northeastward throughout the day up towards Scotland. The maps suggest every single region will see some rain before the storm moves off into the North Sea in the afternoon.

As 3mm to 5mm of rain could fall on parts of Scotland each hour, with up to 2mm per hour expected in southern parts, including London, Southampton and Cardiff.

On Sunday the worst of the rain will have passed, though up to 1mm per hour could still hit western Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and southwest England.

The Met Office has said a spell of more persistent and heavy rain is expected on Saturday as an area of low pressure moves in from the southwest and tracks northeastwards close to the UK. Accompanying this heavy rain will be some strong winds, particularly along coasts, according to the national weather agency.

David Oliver is a Deputy Chief Meteorologist at the Met Office and is responsible for the medium range forecast. He said: “A deep area of low pressure will develop close to the UK on Saturday and track northeast over the weekend, bringing wet and windy weather for many.

“While the exact track and depth of the system is still a little uncertain, at present it looks likely that we’ll see gusts in excess of 50mph in some areas during Saturday and Sunday, especially across coasts, headlands and high ground. In addition to these gusty winds, 10-20mm of rain is likely across many regions, with higher totals over hills in western areas.”

The Met Office said weather warnings could be issued this weekend. For next weekend, the national weather agency adds: "Changeable and at times unsettled weather is likely across the UK next week. Showers or some longer spells of rain are likely with the influence of low pressure never too far away from the UK."
