Alexander Isak will reportedly become one of Liverpool's highest earners if he completes a move to Anfield this summer. The Reds have been chasing Isak's signature for a number of weeks, having initially been told by Newcastle that he was not for sale under any circumstances. They responded by switching their focus to a move for Hugo Ekitike and wasted no time in wrapping up a deal.
It has since emerged that Liverpool are still eager to land Isak, who is desperate to force a move away from Newcastle. He has not travelled with the Magpies squad on their pre-season tour and is reported to be training on his own. The situation is yet to resolve itself but Liverpool are thought to be making progress behind the scenes.
They have already reached a verbal agreement on personal terms with Isak, according to Sky Germany. The report states that he will sign a contract until the summer of 2031 if Liverpool succeed in agreeing a transfer fee with Newcastle.
It is claimed that Isak would become one of the club's highest-paid players, earning a similar salary to that of Ekitike. The latter is reportedly taking home around £250,000 per week, putting him third on the list behind Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk.
The report adds that Liverpool are still trying to find a breakthrough in club-to-club talks with Newcastle. It has been claimed by the Evening Standard that Magpies chiefs have privately set Isak's asking price at a whopping £150million.
It remains to be seen if his transfer request will lower that demand, with Isak clearly unsettled in his current surroundings.
Earlier this month, it was reported that his disgruntlement had been brewing for a long time. He was promised a new contract by former Newcastle co-owner Amanda Staveley and was looking forward to committing his future to the club.
However, the Magpies decided not to open talks because Isak still had multiple years left on his existing deal. They also needed to be careful with their money due to Premier League financial rules, meaning they were reluctant to propose a huge salary.
It was said to have caused friction within Isak's camp, with The Telegraph reporting that his agent was left 'insulted' by the absence of a firm offer.
Only time will tell where Isak will be playing his football when the Premier League season gets underway next month. It will seemingly depend on whether Liverpool can finally tempt Newcastle into cashing in on their prized asset.
Magpies boss Eddie Howe recently conceded that Isak's future was out of his hands, saying: "He is still our player. He's contracted to us. We, to a degree, control what is next for him.
"I would love to believe all possibilities are still available to us. My wish is that he stays, but that's not in my full control. We have not received a formal offer for Alex, from any club. My wish is that he stays and we see him playing again next year."
