THANE: The State Excise Flying Squad intercepted a major illegal liquor consignment near Mumbra in Thane district on Friday, arresting one person and seizing goods valued at Rs 64 lakh.

Acting on a tip-off from a reliable source, officials from the Flying Squad stopped a six-wheeler goods vehicle near Amit Garden on Mumbra Road. During the inspection, they discovered 800 boxes of Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) manufactured in Goa being transported without valid permits or documentation.

The arrested accused was identified as Zulfekar Tajali Chaudhary, who was driving the vehicle at the time of interception. According to excise officials, the total value of the seized liquor along with the vehicle is estimated to be Rs 63.9 lakh.

"This seizure points to organised interstate smuggling of liquor," said a senior excise department official. He added, “The consignment originated in Goa and was likely headed for illegal distribution networks in Maharashtra."

The case was registered under relevant sections of the Maharashtra Prohibition Act. Officials are conducting further investigations to trace the origin of the liquor consignment in Goa and identify the intended recipients in Maharashtra.

The official said that this operation is part of the excise department's ongoing efforts to crack down on illegal liquor transportation and sales across state borders. Officials suspect this may be part of a larger interstate smuggling network that they are working to dismantle.

The department has intensified vigilance along key transit routes known for liquor smuggling activities, particularly those connecting Maharashtra with neighbouring states.
