Apple is planning a dramatic overhaul of the iPhone for its 20th anniversary in 2027, with both a "mostly glass, curved" device and the company's first foldable iPhone slated for release. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman revealed in his latest Power On newsletter that Apple is working on a radically redesigned iPhone that will feature an all-glass enclosure with curved edges and no display cutouts. This would arrive later in 2027, marking a decade since the iPhone X introduced the notch design.
Apple’s 20th anniversary iPhone could ditch the Dynamic Island
The anniversary iPhone will reportedly feature a continuous glass enclosure that wraps around the device, eliminating the metal frame visible on current models. This aligns with Apple patents dating back to 2019 that describe a phone "forming a continuous loop" of glass.
"At least one 2027 iPhone model will place the front-facing camera underneath the screen to enable a truly edge-to-edge display," The Information reported last weekend, complementing Gurman's description of a device with no visible display cutouts. The design represents Apple's most significant iPhone redesign since the iPhone X launched in 2017.
First foldable iPhone from Apple also set for 2027 debut
Before the all-glass iPhone arrives, Apple plans to launch its first foldable iPhone earlier in 2027, Gurman reports. The device is described as "unique" with "the typical foldable display crease expected to be nearly invisible" - addressing a common complaint about competing foldable phones.
This would mark Apple's long-awaited entry into the foldable market, years after competitors like Samsung, Motorola, and Chinese manufacturers established themselves in the space.
Gurman notes these devices are part of a broader "product renaissance" planned for 2027, which also includes Apple's first smart glasses to compete with Meta's Ray-Bans, camera-equipped AirPods and Apple Watches, and even a tabletop robot with its own AI personality.
The dual iPhone releases would coincide with the 20th anniversary of the original iPhone's 2007 launch, potentially revitalizing Apple's product lineup after what Gurman describes as a current "lull" in innovation.
